Chapter Fifteen

Lathan

“Karis!” I called. There was no answer.

“Kayel?” Still no answer.

I couldn’t find anyone in this fucking house! I hated how hungry I was when I first woke. I could hear heartbeats, but I didn’t see anyone.

“Dammit! Is anyone here!?” I was yelling. I didn’t really care. Were they outside? That had to be it.

“In here,” Monty replied from the kitchen.

I walked in a moment later. I had expected to see Karis or at the very least Kayel. But, it was just Monty sitting with his phone and a sandwich the size of his head.

“Hey, boss, hungry?” he mumbled around a massive bite.

“Yeah, but where are Karis and Kayel? I need to bind her.”

He stopped chewing with half a pickle hanging out of his mouth. I raised an eyebrow at his odd expression. He looked … guilty maybe? His eyes darted from my face to the door and back again.

“Monty…” I warned.

He swallowed, coughed, and spoke, “Boss, let me start off by saying I told them not to go.” My eyes went wide at his admission. He had my undivided attention.

“Monty, explain,” I hissed.

“Listen, I told them to be back here before you got up. Wait, no, I said don’t go. But, barring that I told them they had better be back here before you got up.” His tone was frantic.

He was rambling so I put my hand up in a stopping motion.

“Well?” He’d better get to the point before I really lose my shit.

“Uh well, I mean, um. Yeah, they a-a-aren’t back.”

I saw red. Fuck, belay that, I saw purple, I was so incensed.

“Where the hell are they?” I snarled the words through clenched teeth.

“They went to Kayel’s apartment,” he squeaked the words out shyly.

“I told you. I told all of you to STAY HERE. And none of you could do that! Why do I have laws? Just for you idiots to break them?” I yelled all while throwing my hands up in the air in utter frustration.

“Boss, I’m-“

“Save it! Do you understand there’s a bounty on her head? She’s the only witness to the murder of a council member. And the culprit is likely another council member. Do you morons not get that this election, the pending war, everything we’ve worked so hard for, for so long, hinges on this human?!”

Monty, for once in his life, didn’t speak. Good thinking on his part. If he had, I wouldn’t be held liable for his demise.

I started for the front door.

“Boss!” Monty yelled from behind me.

“What,” I replied, reaching or the knob.

“D-don’t you need to eat?” he stuttered.

Smiling and turning the knob, I laughed the next words, “If I fed right now, I’d likely kill you.”

Without looking back at my enslaved, I sprinted out the house.
